Subject description

The primary objective of this course is to equip students with fundamental knowledge of ethics and sustainability essential for responsible innovation and the advancement of new information technologies (IT) in today's society. Core themes encompass ethics' role in responsible innovation and IT development, concerns about information privacy, as well as the social, economic, and environmental impacts of novel IT solutions. Furthermore, the course delves into how IT development and innovation can contribute to realizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In addressing ethical and sustainability concerns, the course examines perspectives from diverse stakeholders at three levels: individual (IT developers, innovators, consumers, investors), organizational (commercial, public, and non-governmental entities), and societal (local and regional communities, nations, global society). Collaborative efforts in tackling real-world ethical and sustainability challenges form a vital component of this course.

Learning outcome

The student gains specialized knowledge in essential ethics and sustainability concepts and theories. They develop an extensive grasp of socio-economic and environmental dimensions linked to innovation and IT progression. Profound insight into ethical IT management principles and responsible innovation is achieved.

Applying relevant frameworks and tools, students analyze socio-economic and environmental ramifications of IT advancement. They evaluate the impact of innovation/IT solutions from diverse stakeholder perspectives. Ethical justifications for innovation choices are reasoned, while ethical concerns tied to privacy in new IT development are critically examined. Strategies for responsible use of personal data are proposed.

Within a broader context, the student demonstrates critical thinking about current ethical and sustainability frameworks. They discuss real-world challenges stemming from contemporary socio-economic trends. The ability to introspectively assess their professional influence within the societal and environmental sphere is aptly showcased.
