How to Apply for Student Exchange

1. Determine your Exchange Opportunities

To find the list of exchange opportunities, you need to check the "Frequently Asked Questions" section on the programme page for your specific study programme. Note that you can only travel to partner institutions that Kristiania has agreements with. You can view a list of all Kristiania's exchange partners here.

2. Understand the Requirements

The criteria for nomination are:

• Minimum grade average of C.
• Normal study progression.
• Motivation letter.
• Language proficiency requirements will align with the admission criteria of the partner institution.

If nominated by Kristiania, you must apply directly to the relevant partner institution. These institutions might have requirements such as GPA, language skills, or portfolio submissions (for creative subjects).

3. Write a Motivation Letter

A motivation letter is a text where you talk about yourself and your reasons for wanting to go on exchange. A motivation letter is somewhat similar to a job application.

You should present yourself and explain why you're a good fit for the exchange opportunity, similar to how you would in a job application. Try to stay focused on the topic and avoid digressions. In your letter, address:

• Why you want to go on exchange to your top-priority country and educational institution.
• How the country, institution, and courses will contribute to your academic and personal development.
• Feel free to reflect on your other choices in life, relevant to your field of study and as an exchange student.
• How this experience will benefit your future career.

At Kristiania, the motivation letter should be a maximum of 350 words and written in English. If you're applying to a program conducted in a Scandinavian language, you can write your letter in Norwegian.

Sign the motivation letter with your name and upload it in Søknadsweb. 

4. Special needs

If you're a student with disabilities who requires support, contact the International Mobility Team as soon as possible at utveksling@kristiania.no.

Services offered can vary from country to country, including:

• Adapted housing
• Accessibility on campus
• Exam arrangements
• Adapted curriculum (audiobooks)
• Other assistance

Most institutions have a "special needs service" that can provide information about special needs options for students. Students are in direct contact with the host institution in order to plan this as part of the application process.

Erasmus+ Top-up Grant for Students with Fewer Opportunities

Erasmus+ aims to make exchange opportunities more accessible. There's an additional grant for students with fewer opportunities to make it easier to go on exchange. Erasmus+ students falling under one of these three categories can apply for the additional grant:

• Students with children under 18
• Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses
• Students with a refugee background

The grant amount is 250 EUR per month. Even if you qualify for multiple categories, you can only receive one top-up grant. You apply through Nettskjema.

5. Apply to Kristiania for Exchange in Søknadsweb

Søknadsweb opens about 1 month before the application deadline. For the spring semester exchange, the deadline is September 20th, and for the autumn semester exchange, March 1st. You can list up to three choices in your application. 

After being nominated by Kristiania, you'll then apply directly to the partner institution abroad.

6. Receive a Response to your Application

You should receive a response to your application as an exchange student within 4 weeks. If there are more applicants than places, grades, motivation letters, and evaluations from programme leaders might be considered. If students are evaluated equally, a lottery might determine whether you receive a place at the chosen institution.
